I am all for letting kids be kids, but when do we start preparing our children for real life? Children are being forced to grow up a lot faster these days then what I remember growing up. Times are different. What are we doing to prepare our children to meet this challenge?
One thing that thankfully is being looked at today is the way we are using high school to prepare the student for life. Some people will go to college. Some people will go to vocational school. There are those that need to be trained for life no matter what road they choose to walk down.
Greenville, South Carolina is leading the pack in looking at alternative ways to educate and prepare the youth for life and employment when they graduate. There is a school called the Next High School where this is beginning to be a reality.
The students are divided into schools in technology, life sciences, energy and mobility. The school of mobility includes automotive and aerospace. The emphasis is on becoming part of the solution by problem solving. This is done by involving the students in real life applications like crime-scene investigations for example. There is also a emphasis in exploring the local market by matching training to the industry and jobs in the immediate area.
This is the beginning of the cycle of matching education to jobs. It does not necessarily mean that anyone has to be stuck in a job for life. It just means the beginning of training our youth to be able to survive in the job market upon graduation from high school till they complete their higher education.

“I am going to go to law school.” What parent would not have liked to hear their son or daughter say these words. Today not so much. Why? Because there are no jobs for lawyers. There is a saturation of lawyers that is even causing some law firms to go into bankruptcy because of the competition. Steven J. Harper has put out a book that is a tell all about law school and the prospects of a graduate today called “The Lawyer Bubble”. Remember the housing bubble? Yea, you get the picture. Be informed so you can make the right choices when choosing where you want to go to school. Where are the jobs? Read more in the following article by Everett Bellamy:
I am traveling around the country and tonight I am spending the night in Odessa, Texas. As I sat out by the pool this afternoon I scanned the local paper. There is an article talking about how Forbes named Midland and Odessa, Texas as the best two small cities for jobs right now. This is because of the oil and petroleum industry. If you are looking for a job and you do not want to go where the weather is cold like ,in North or South Dakota, consider Midland or Odessa, Texas where the weather is hot.
I am so excited for the vocational students here in Chicago because when they go to job fairs they usually leave with a job offer. That is great news because college students are often not that lucky. I want you to be able to find a job when you graduate. That should be your first priority when you are thinking about going to school. There will be plenty of time for other things after you graduate and get a job. Plenty of time to date, marry, party, take more classes, read books, see movies. You will have the rest of your life to grow and do the things that you enjoy. You will have more money to do those things because you will have a job. Read more about vocational school and job fairs in the following article by Parija Kavilanz:
I get very angry when I read stories like the one below and then hear there is an unemployment rate of 9 to 12 percent. Something is wrong with this picture. Maybe the problem is in the unemployment benefits themselves.
I don’t believe anyone should be receiving unemployment benefits without at least being required to take job training in the areas where jobs are available. I have never in the forty years I have been in the job market ever drawn unemployment. It is not because I have not been eligible. I have lost a job in the past but I always had another job before the week was out and most often before the day was over. I never felt I could support the life style that I had become use to with the limited amount I would get with unemployment.
That is why I can not understand why people choose unemployment over finding a good job when so many jobs are available. That is why I feel there is something wrong with the system. The old saying: “give a man a fish and he will eat for a day or teach a man to fish and he can always feed himself”. Unemployment benefits should be about sustaining someone while we are teaching them to fish.
I am so happy and proud to come to you this year with all the jobs that are available across the country. Feel your not trained for those jobs? No problem. I will tell you how you can get the training and how you can get it paid for.
The fact of the matter there are more than enough jobs for everyone. We need welders, airline pilots, air traffic controllers, construction workers, and more. Not trained for those jobs no problem. You can go to school for 1 to 2 years to get the training for most of these jobs at a vocational school.
There are a lot of vocational schools through out the country and most of them are very affordable without your having to get large college loans. In some cases the government may help you with grants, in other cases you may be able to get the company you are going to go to work with to pay for your education, sometimes the company will train you themselves.
I hear company owners telling me that they need more mechanics and air conditioning and heating people because they can not find enough applicants. Do not believe the media that there are no jobs out there. That is far from the truth. There are actually more jobs than people to take them. That is why Chinese are being shipped in to take some of the jobs. Do not be left behind. Get the training for these jobs now while they are in high demand.
